The purpose of this paper is to restore a hidden history of lesbians in modem Britain. recent western historiography begins to search for 'Others' in history. In this history of 'Others' is included the history of homosexuality. Despite of the paucity of sources, historians are now puzzling the fragmentary informations to reveal why homosexuals were ostracized and oppressed. This paper insists that male homosexuals in modem Britain were excluded as 'Others' because of their giving up masculinity which was essentially needed for mobilizing the British nation against France in the imperial competition. However, lesbians were tolerated both legally and culturally. This paper suggests that it was mainly because lesbianism was recognized as sexuality without penetration which was not able to challenge the phallocentric patriarchy. The survived sources show that lesbianism was an act of the upper class women which was regarded as a Platonic love of ladies. This class-biased view of lesbianism was the secondary reason of toleration.
